Reddit for first-time founders: the subreddit playbook

Reddit punishes self-promotion and rewards usefulness. Here is the 30-day playbook for a first-time founder figuring out whether Reddit can be the channel that brings the first hundred users.

Your first Reddit post as a founder probably went like this. You wrote a 250-word intro to your product, posted it in r/SaaS at 10am Tuesday, refreshed for an hour, and watched it die at 1 upvote with a moderator removal in the inbox. The advice that sent you there was right about one thing. Reddit is one of the only channels on the open internet where a founder with zero audience can put a product in front of 5,000 in-market readers in a single day. The same channel will remove your account if you post the same intro twice.

This is the 30-day playbook for figuring out whether Reddit can bring you the first hundred users, written for a founder who has no followers anywhere else and cannot afford to spend three months guessing.

// 01Is Reddit the right channel for you?

Reddit had 76 million daily active users at its March 2024 IPO and reached a peak market cap above $30 billion in the same year. The Google partnership announced on February 22, 2024 also means Reddit threads now surface more often on the first page of Google search results, which doubles the work each post can do. None of that helps you if your product is the wrong shape for the channel.

The three-question fit test

  • Does your buyer Google their problem?: Reddit is a search-driven, opt-in community network. If your buyer types "best self-hosted analytics" or "how do I stop my freelance taxes from blowing up" into Google, they will land on Reddit threads on the way to your product. If your buyer is a CFO who reads Gartner reports, they will not.
  • Is the buyer technical or curious enough to read 300 words?: Reddit rewards prose. A buyer who skims TikTok captions will bounce off a 4-paragraph comment. A buyer who spends 20 minutes on a tool comparison will read it. Indie SaaS, developer tools, finance for freelancers, productivity, prosumer hardware, and most niche B2B fit. Consumer apps for under-25s and enterprise multi-year contracts do not.
  • Do you have one founder with 3 hours a week to comment?: Reddit punishes outsourced posting and rewards an identifiable human. If the only person who can answer the technical questions in the thread is a hire who comes in next quarter, Reddit will not work yet.
The fastest way to fail.The single most common founder mistake on Reddit is posting a launch announcement as the second-ever post from an account created that morning. Reddit’s Crowd Control system, plus the human moderators of every active subreddit, exists specifically to kill that pattern. A 30-day-old account with 200 comment karma in three subreddits posts more on day one than a fresh account ever will.

The pattern is the same. Be useful long before you sell.

// 02The 30-day plan

Run this as a single experiment with four weekly milestones. Each milestone has a concrete artifact you can count.

Week 1: Subreddit pick and 5 days of lurking

Pick 5 subreddits. Not 12. Not 3. Five is the number that gives you enough surface area to diversify if one is a dead end, without spreading attention so thin you become a stranger in all of them. Score each one along three axes before you commit.

  • Active members, not subscribers: The subscriber count is vanity. Look at the top of the subreddit for "online now" and the average comments-per-post on the top weekly threads. r/SaaS has roughly 280,000 subscribers but its hottest posts hit 40 to 80 comments. r/SideProject has fewer subscribers and more replies. r/EntrepreneurRideAlong has fewer still and produces longer threads.
  • Founder friendliness, by rule check: Read the sidebar. r/Entrepreneur (around 4.5 million subscribers) forbids self-promo outside the weekly thread. r/SaaS allows product mentions in context. r/startups bans direct links to your own site in posts. Treat each rule as a constraint, not a suggestion. Moderators ban quickly.
  • Search intent overlap: Type your top three keywords into Reddit search. If you find existing threads with 30+ comments asking your exact problem, that subreddit has demonstrated demand. If your search returns three posts and a tumbleweed, the audience may exist somewhere else.

Week 2: 20 useful comments, zero product mentions

Spend the second week building credibility you can spend later. The bar is 20 substantive comments across your 5 subreddits, averaging 4 per subreddit. Substantive means at least three sentences, answering a real question, with a specific number or named tool in it. “Great post!” does not count. “We saw 35% lower trial-to-paid when we moved the onboarding video above the fold, here is what the test looked like” does.

The 10-to-1 ratio, restated honestly.Reddit’s old 9:1 self-promo rule is unenforceable now, but the underlying social contract is real. For every link to your own thing, post ten comments that have nothing to do with your thing. The ratio is not punishment. It is the rate at which strangers will start to recognize your username.

Week 3: One product post in the most permissive subreddit

Pick the one subreddit from your five where the rules and tone allow a founder post. r/SideProject and r/SaaS are usually the right starting points. Post on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning in your target time zone. Lead with the problem, not the product.

The structure that lands: 1) the specific pain you ran into, in one paragraph; 2) what you tried first that did not work, in one paragraph; 3) the thing you built, in one paragraph; 4) one open question for the subreddit. The open question matters. It tells the algorithm and the humans that the post is a conversation, not a billboard.

Week 4: Either compound or run a controlled second test

If Week 3 produced more than 30 upvotes and at least one DM, expand. Rewrite the post for a second subreddit with a different angle, not the same headline. If Week 3 fizzled, ship a second post into a different subreddit with a different framing. Two real attempts give you enough signal to decide whether the channel is yours.

// 03Kill criteria and what good looks like

Set the kill threshold before Week 1 starts, not after Week 4 disappoints you. The threshold is the metric value that ends the experiment with a clean verdict, so you do not spend October still posting in November out of stubbornness. See the kill threshold definition for the long version.

The numbers worth tracking

  • Comment karma earned across the 5 subreddits: Good: 200 to 500 by the end of Week 2. Kill: under 50. Karma is a proxy for how often your comments resonate. Under 50 across 20 substantive comments means the audience is not where you thought it was.
  • Upvotes on the Week 3 product post: Good: 30 or more on day one in a 280k-subscriber subreddit. Kill: 5 or fewer. Reddit upvotes follow a power law. A post that crosses 30 in the first three hours typically reaches 100 to 300. A post that stalls under 10 has been judged.
  • Direct messages and replies from the product post: Good: 2 to 5 DMs or signups in the next 72 hours. Kill: zero direct messages and zero signups across both product posts. DMs are the strongest signal Reddit gives you. They mean a stranger read your post and wanted a private conversation.

Write these numbers down on day zero. If you cross every kill threshold by day 30, Reddit is not your channel and the next 30 days belong somewhere else.

// 04What to do when it works, and when it does not

When the playbook works

A Reddit channel that earns its place produces a slow, repeatable rhythm. The shape looks like this. One product post per month per subreddit. Twenty to forty comments a month, each with a specific number or a real artifact. A founder account that builds toward 1,000+ karma by month three. One or two DMs a week from strangers who read a thread you commented on six weeks ago.

When you see that pattern, do three things and stop. Pick a second subreddit and run the same four-week plan there. Save your three best comments as their own short Twitter or LinkedIn posts so the work compounds across channels. Add a low-friction CTA to your Reddit profile, since strangers will start clicking it. Do not hire someone to post for you. The first time a moderator notices, the account dies.

When it does not work

If you cross the kill thresholds at day 30, stop. Then ask the cheaper second question. Was the channel wrong, or was the framing wrong? The fastest way to find out is to take the strongest comment you wrote in Week 2 and post it as a Show HN on Hacker News, a question on Indie Hackers, or a 4-tweet thread on Twitter. If the same content earns engagement on a different channel, the post worked but Reddit was the wrong room. If nothing works anywhere, the message itself needs surgery before the next channel test.

// 05Five things to carry forward

  • 01: Be the person, not the brand. Reddit kills brand accounts and tolerates founders. The face on the username matters more than the logo on the link.
  • 02: Pick 5 subreddits and stay. Two thousand karma across 5 communities beats two hundred karma across 20. Depth signals belonging, breadth signals spam.
  • 03: Comment before you post. The 20-substantive-comments-first rule is not etiquette. It is the part of the experiment that earns you the right to post anything at all.
  • 04: Write the kill threshold on day zero. A 30-day Reddit test with a pre-committed exit costs nothing. The same 30 days without one will quietly turn into 90 and then into a year of muttering that Reddit does not work.
  • 05: One post is a sample of one. Two posts in two different framings give you a signal you can act on. If both lose, the message is the bug, not the channel.
